But it’s not always clear what consumers want and need — which is why Marigold recently released its Retail Forecast: The 2023 Consumer Trends Index, surfacing key insights for what retail marketers should be focused on in the upcoming year.

One big trend: Consumers are savvy and are looking for personalized communication and high-quality customer service. For example:

  • 49% of global consumers are frustrated with irrelevant content from brands.
  • 42% felt frustration about messages from brands that don’t reflect their wants or needs.
  • 25% of shoppers discontinued their relationship with a brand because of poor customer service, a 9% increase since 2022.
