The Two Genres That Continue to Buoy Traditional TV

Even as the consumers increasingly shift to streaming, there are two genres that continue to dominate live, linear TV: sports and news. Inscape’s Q4 2023 TV Market Trends report, based on linear and streaming audience data from over 22 million opted-in smart TVs, reveals that these categories are still overwhelmingly watched via cable, satellite or over-the-air antenna (OTA).

  • In Q4 2023, nearly 80% of news viewing occurred via cable, satellite or OTA, while almost 72% of sports viewing came from those traditional inputs.
  • For NFL and college football specifically, less than a third of viewing time occurred on streaming in Q4 2023.
  • Looking at the two Republican party presidential debates that took place in Q4, over 80% of viewing time occurred on cable/satellite/OTA.
