The most engaging stories of 2025 were some of what you'd expect – and plenty that you may not. But one of the bigger takeaways from Chartbeat's annual list of top stories is that certain publishers intrinsically understood how to both tell dynamic stories that readers were glued to, and find ways to make them succeed within today's evolving discovery environment.

  • Chatbeat data highlights that the BBC accounted for just over a third of the 100 most engaging stories of the year – including its most engaging and No. 5 overall, a piece in the aftermath of Gene Hackman and his wife's death.
  • The New York Times contributed three of the 10 most-engaging stories, and just over a fifth of the top 100 – with an emphasis on breaking news and political pieces.
  • Fox News had the most engaging story of the year, which was also written in the wake of Hackman's death. This is the first time Fox News has had the most engaging story of the year, per Chartbeat's rankings.
