What Americans Want More Of In Movie, TV Storytelling

U.S. consumers want to watch content that's more relatable to their own everyday experiences.

A new study from New America and MarketCast reveals what audiences are looking for from movies and TV, and the overarching theme is authenticity. For instance:

  • 92% of those surveyed said that it was important ("very important" or "somewhat important") to see realistic work and family scenarios in TV and film content.
  • Half of all viewers responded that they were interested in seeing more of this content, while 46% were happy with the current amount; overall, indicating that there's more growth to be found there.
  • 47% of respondents indicated they related to the experience of living paycheck to paycheck, and 51% were concerned about balancing work and personal life – both of which could present opportunities for more relatable storytelling that could resonate better with audiences amid a fractured media environment.
