The Streaming Originals Slowdown

The Streaming Originals Slowdown

The following is a selection from Brandon Katz of Parrot Analytics.

Streaming originals went from a rarity to the norm in no time at all – data from Parrot Analytics shows that the number of new titles have skyrocketed by quarter since the end of 2019, but the rate of growth has also slowed considerably since last year.

  • Streaming originals growth was 7% or higher per quarter in 2021 and 2022, to coincide with an influx of new services, plus increased investment from existing services like Netflix and Hulu (among others).
  • Tightening purse strings from major media companies have helped drive down the rate of growth in recent quarters, and that's also led to licensed titles appearing on Netflix again.
  • After entertainment work stoppages last year – and given the reemergence of licensing – it could mean even more of a slowdown on streaming originals coming in 2024 (which could benefit Netflix most of all).
