On the field, this NFL season was one filled with parity and the unexpected – especially without one clearly dominant team and the long-successful Chiefs stumbling to their first losing season in 15 years.

The added intrigue seemed to pay off for TV networks and advertisers as well. On the advertiser front, though, insurance brands were the biggest spenders – accounting for four of the top five spots by est. national linear TV ad spend during games this year, according to data from iSpot.

  • Auto & general insurance brands spent over $634 million during NFL games this year; outpacing every other industry (closest was automakers at about $100 million less).
  • GEICO and Progressive were No. 1 and 2, respectively, with Allstate and State Farm at fourth and fifth (Nationwide and Liberty Mutual were also among the top 20 NFL advertisers by linear spend).
  • Beyond insurance and automakers, QSR, wireless and beer/hard seltzer brands rounded out the top industries by NFL TV ad spend.
