How Action, Animation Win With Movie Audiences
The following is a selection from Brandon Katz of Greenlight Analytics
As studios search for the next winners at the box office, two genres seem to fare better than most: Action and animation. Data from Greenlight Analytics looks at how the two are potentially keeping Hollywood afloat right now, as additional pressures mount.
- In their final week, action-related films are regularly among the top 10 for indicators like awareness, interest, theatrical intent and willingness to pay.
- Since 2011, action has never accounted for less than 20% of the domestic box office in the U.S.
- Family and animation films regularly score highly for willingness to pay (at least 69%), with parents consistently willing to shell out more for these titles – even post-COVID.
- The idea that animation wins with audiences translates beyond the box office to streaming as well: Animation accounted for over 25% of top-10 titles on Netflix from 2020-24.
